News and Updates

Since our last post there have been a lot of changes within the company, as well as an abundance of projects we've been working on.

To start with, we've hired a full time laborer. Her name is Victoria, and she has been a fantastic addition to the team. Welcome, Victoria! In other, more personal matters, we've also added an addition to our family with the birth of our daughter. It has been a very busy last few months for C.R.L Construction!

Projects wise, work has been very busy. We've been doing a variety of basements and kitchens with a few bathrooms thrown into the mix and we're hoping to do some decks and roofs in the next few months. I had an opportunity to build a custom spice rack for one of the kitchens we've worked on and it turned out perfect. The homeowner was really pleased. Currently we are redoing a basement in the Parkdale area. So far we've gutted it and  have created a family space, a laundry area, an office area and large storage area. We should be finishing up fairly soon and will have lots of photos to share so be sure the check back. Once we're done there we're off to gut and rebuild a full bathroom and powder room in a rental property.

Also, we've launched our website! Our plan is use the website to exhibit photos of completed projects, offer testimonials from our happy clients and offer more formal information regarding the business. Our website will work hand in hand with our blog and Facebook page to offer any and all information required to answer all ofyour questions. If there is anything you would like to see or know more about, please feel free to leave a comment in the comments section here, on the website or also on our Facebook page. We're everywhere!

We've also been working with a very special couple to help them reach their wedding dreams. Jordan and Brian are looking to get married at the end of August and are trying to do so as free of charge as possible. C.R.L Construction will be building the archway that they will be married under. Check back here for progress pictures of their archway. And you can check their blog for more information on their wedding project.

Special project: revealed!

As I mentioned on our Facebook page, we at C.R.L. Construction have been working on a particularly interesting and somewhat difficult project and it was just recently completed. A client had asked me to build them a unique piece in place of a door for a small room that housed all the cables from their AV set up. It was mutually agreed upon that we would try a book case that would swing out so they could still access the room behind.

Initially I thought this would be a fairly straight forward project; build a bookcase, put it on hinges, use a ball catch to keep the door closed and ta-da, all finished. But things didn't end up working out quite the way I had planned. It took about 2 days to build the actual book case, not including the face frame. That part was easy. The installation, however, was a challenge. I just couldn't seem to get the door to swing the way I wanted, or with the aesthetic I was looking for. After some trial and error (and re-crunching numbers) I finally figured it out.

So here is the final project, framed in and ready to go. All thats left is for the home owners to paint and it will be all set. (Click here for a video of how it works:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tn8aq8negSA)

If this project is something that would interest you for your own home, please feel free to contact me. I truly enjoyed creating this custom piece and would love to create something for you!

Basement on Carruthers

Hi everyone and thanks for visiting our blog!

We just got finished completing a full basement renovation in a home on Carruthers, in Ottawa. The renovation required me to frame the walls, spray foam insulate the walls, put up dry wall, build an entirely new staircase and then a custom wooden railing for the staircase, custom doors, install pot lights, installing the sub floor, and a custom louvered cover for a heating vent. The project took just over a month to complete (February 7th until March 8th). They were very satisfied with the timeliness of my work as well as with the quality of the work completed. Check back in the next few days for pictures of the renovation (published with the home owners permission).

We are currently working on developing a new program to reward our returning clients and to entice new clients alike, so check back for that information as well!

Welcome to our site!

Hi there and thanks for visiting our blog site.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce our team as well as give you a bit of background on how the company got started.

Currently the staff team consists of mainly myself, Chris Lackey. I am the lead carpenter, with over 5 years of experience. I am formally trained at Durham College (which is located in Toronto, Ontario), have previously worked for a small renovations company in Ottawa called 20/20. Unfortunately the company downsized during the recession, but I turned it into a positive for myself and started my own business. On top of my formal experience, I have many additional years of informal apprentice like training working under both my father and grandfather who are expert carpenters. You could say that is where I gained my passion for this type of work. I have a sub-contractor staff team of 5 who are experts in a variety of fields from plumbing to wiring to welding, each of whom bring something unique to the table.

We recently celebrated our one year anniversary of being in business, and I look forward to many more years of serving Ottawa and surrounding area. Contact me today if you have any questions or comments. Estimates are free!
